Squad Sees Uptick in Calls for the Summer

August is traditionally a quiet month in Summit as many residents take vacation and members of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad typically receive fewer emergency calls than at any other time fo the year.  That was not the case tghis August as the Squad responded to 169 emergency 9-1-1 calls; up from 162 in June and just 2 fewer that the 171 July.

Junior EMS Members Participate in Mass Casualty Exercise

On Tuesday, May 20, 2019, junior members of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad responded to a staged Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) at the squad building on 1000 Summit Ave.

Steve Mortenson Receives EMT Excellence Award from Overlook

Stephen Mortenson, a member of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad received the 2019 EMT Excellence Award from Overlook Medical Center, part of Atlantic Health System, at the hospital's 23rd annual Excellence in EMS Awards Celebration.

The event, which took place on May 23 at Galloping Hill Golf Course, celebrated the important role of EMS first responders in the communities they serve and highlighted the accomplishments of standout members from local squads in the region to help mark National EMS Week.

Squad Awarded $4K Grant from Junior League of Summit

The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad has received a $4,000 grant from the Junior League of Summit, Inc. to help fund the purchase of digital radios that will be compatible with other communications systems used by first responders in Summit and the surrounding area.

Investors Bank Helps Squad with Radio Upgrade

The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad has received a $20,000 grant from Investors Foundation for the purchase of digital radios that will be compatible with systems used by first responders in Summit and the surrounding area.

Squad Celebrates 56 Years of Service

Current and former members of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad recently celebrated 56 years of service to the community at their annual Membership and Awards Dinner.  Mayor Nora Radest was also in attendance.  Several volunteers were recognized for their contributions including Anthony Campanelli and Robert Endress for 5 years of service; Cory Platt, Mel Harari and Henrietta Mahon for 10 years of service and John Staunton for 35 years of service.

Squad Reorganizes for 2019

Mayor Nora Radest accepted an invitation to the First Aid Squad’s annual reorganization meeting to administer the oath of office to the officers and trustees for 2019, a task she was happy to perform for the 3rd consecutive year.

Bob Flanagan, who previously served as Vice President is the Squad’s new president.  John Christmann is the new Vice President.  Dave Bernstein and Katherine Ganger will continue to serve as Treasurer and Recording Secretary respectively, while Fred Schwarzmann will serve as the new Corresponding Secretary.

Fund Drive is Off to a Good Start

In early October, the Squad launched its annual fundraising appeal Neighbors Helping Neighbors. The goal of the campaign is to raise $300,000 to fund squad operations and help offset costs associated with an impending upgrade to a digital radio network for use with Summit police and fire departments in emergency response actions.
