Summit Squad Tackles Winter Storm Quinn

“Be Prepared” may be the motto of the Boy Scouts, but it’s also everyday practice at the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad.  So, it should come as no surprise that an Eagle Scout was among the 22 volunteers to staff the Squad’s headquarters during this week’s winter storm “Quinn”.  Preparations for Quinn began Monday after reviewing weather forecasts and calling for extra volunteers to staff the building on Wednesday and Thursday.

Seat Belts Save Lives!

When Summit EMS Volunteers are dispatched to respond to a motor vehicle accident with rollover, they always hope for the best and prepare for the worst.  That was the case when Summit EMTs  Fred Schwarzmann and John Staunton arrived at this accident scene on Route 78.

Knights of Columbus Support Local EMS Squads

The Springfield Council #5560 of the Knights of Columbus recently awarded grants to the volunteer EMS agencies of Summit and Springfield.

According to Grand Knight Chris Tarashuk, the membership wanted to support both squads since the Knights property sits on the border of the two towns. The building is in Springfield Township while the driveway is in the City of Summit.

First Aid Squad Installs New Leadership

Summit Mayor Nora Radest visited the annual meeting of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad to perform the swearing in ceremony for the 2018 officers and Trustees.

John Buscaino, who has previously served as Training Officer and Vice President, takes the helm as the new President, Bob Flanagan is the new Vice President. Nancy Weeks and Katherine Ganger serve as Corresponding and Recording Secretary, respectively. Dave Bernstein returns as Treasurer. Completing the Board of Trustees are Carl Ganger, James Rath, Paul Raynolds, Fred Schwarzmann, George Shepherd and Greg Vartan.

Squad Responds to Large Apartment Fire

An early morning fire at 125 Summit Ave dispalced all living in the building The fast moving blaze drove several residents to escape out of rear windiows.  15 Summit EMS volunteers responded with 3 ambulances, a first responder/command truck and rehab trailer.  Due to the extreme cold, a Medical Ambulance Bus was also requested from Elizabeth and another from Somerville.  The first arriving ambulance crew treated and transported 2 of those residents to Overlook Medical Center with non-lifre thretaning injuries and then returned to the scene to assist with firefighter rehab.  The extreme col

Matt Raymond of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad received the Volunteer EMT of the Year award from the EMS Councl of New Jersey.  The council repersents about 300 volunteer EMS and rescue ageinceis in the state. 

City Proclaims September as Summit First Aid Squad Month

During Tuesday’s Common Council meeting, Summit Mayor Nora Radest presented the Proclamation while acknowledging the squad and its all-volunteer membership for more than 55 years of dedicated service to the Summit community.  “The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad provides an essential service and is truly dedicated to protecting and serving the citizens of Summit,” said Mayor Radest. “Whether it is for a simple injured ankle or a serious cardiac arrest, these highly-trained and committed volunteers are always prepared to help and ready when needed.

Summit EMS Volunteer Honored by Overlook

John Staunton, a 33 year member of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad was honored with the 2017 EMS Excellence Award by Overlook Medical Center during National EMS Week.  Staunton joined the squad in 1983 and has served in several leadership positions including multiple terms as Training Lieutenant, Equipment Lieutenant, Captain, Trustee, and President.

Carbon Monoxide Sends Residents and Responders to Hospital

What began as a 9-1-1 call for a medical emergency from a Summit resident in her home, evolved into an incident that sent 5 people, including 3 first responders to the hospital.  The initial call for help came just before 3 AM from a woman complaining of heart palpitations.  Not long after EMS arrived on the scene, the woman’s husband also became ill followed by a paramedic from Atlantic Health who had responded to assist.  Members of the Summit Fire Department discovered high levels of carbon monoxide (CO) in the home.  Both residents and the paramedic were treated and transported by ambul
