Since 1962, the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad has been providing 24-hour emergency ambulance response at no cost to the patients they serve or the City of Summit.   Each fall, they ask the community for support to continue this vital mission. The annual fund drive appeal is mailed to each home and business in Summit.

During lthe September 4 Common Council meeting, Summit Mayor Nora Radest issued a Proclamation of September as “Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad Month” in the City, acknowledging the squad and its all-volunteer membership for more than 55 years of dedicated service to the Summit community.  “The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad members have given an untold number of hours of service to Summit residents and patrons of our businesses, medical institutions and stores,” said Mayor Radest.

The Summit First Aid Squad received a request from Summit Police to assist with a search for a missing child.  The on-duty crew responded to the area with an ambulance and first responder truck. As is the case with all emergency dispatches, a text message was sent to our members.  Two off-duty members, Josie Roberts and Tara Mireskandari live in the neighborhood where the incident was reported and offered to help.  Tara picked up Josie at her home and the 2 were assigned to search in a different direction from where other units we looking.

At the April 3 Common Council meeting, Summit Fire Chief Eric Evers bestowed the "Chief's Award" upon 15 members of the SUmmit Volunter First Aid Squad who respnded to the 5-alarm apartment building fire in the early morning hours of December 31.2017.  Despite temperatures well below freezing, volunteers treated and transported 2 building resident who were injured jumping from an upper floor, helped set up an aid station in the neraby Committed Pig Restaurant for 12 displaced families, and set up an on scene rehab area for the many firefighteters braving the cold to fight the fire.
