Mayor Nora Radest has issued a Proclamation designating September as "Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad Month". During Tuesday’s Common Council meeting, the Mayor acknowledged the squad and its all volunteer membership for their dedicated service to the Summit community for over 50 years. She also noted that the First Aid Squad’s annual fund drive will launch later this month and encouraged all to generously support the squad. Accepting the proclamation on behalf of the Squad were President Mike D’Ecclessis and Chief Kari Phair. Mr. D’Ecclessis a, volunteer for more than 35 years, thanked the Mayor, members of Council, all the city agencies and the citizens of Summit for their generous support over the past 54 years.
Founded in 1962, the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad serves as the City’s primary Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agency, answering 9-1-1 medical calls 24 hours a day as well as providing stand-by coverage at community events, and non-emergency medical transport. Staffed entirely by volunteers and is funded solely through private contributions, the Squad operates 3 fully equipped ambulances, a first response truck, a special operations trailer and one of New Jersey first EMS bike teams. Neither their patients nor the taxpayer have ever received a bill for the squad’s services.
