First Aid Squad Hosts Emergency Preparedness Class

Mon, 2013-09-23 15:43 -- John Staunton

September may be Summit First Aid Squad Month here in Summit, but it’s also National Preparedness Month, a perfect time to review our own plans for what to do when the next disaster strikes.  In the past 2 years we’ve seen  hurricane Irene, a heavy October snow storm, a new phenomenon labeled “super storm” Sandy and a tornado.  All had similar results disrupting power and other utilities, public transportation and the ability for many businesses and institutions to remain open.

The First Aid Squad will host a session “Are You Ready” On Sunday, September 29 at 7 PM at their building on Summit Ave. across from the Middle School.  Participants will learn how to create a disaster plan, build a supply kit and make the “stay or go” decision. Information from the American Red Cross and the City’s newly forming Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT) will also be available.

All are welcome and there is no charge for the class.  Anyone interested in attending should contact the First Aid Squad via email at: prepare@summitems.org.

A similar session will also be hosted by the Summit Police on Wednesday September 25 at the Middle School.

The all volunteer First Aid Squad is always looking for new members to join its ranks. All needed training, uniforms and equipment is provided. For information, please call 908-277-9479, or visit their web site at: summitems.org.
