Dave Schempp Honored with EMS Excellence Award

Sat, 2016-06-18 14:20 -- John Staunton

David Schempp, a 15 year member of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad was honored with the 2016 EMS Excellence Award by Overlook Medical Center during National EMS Week.

Dave was among the many who witnessed the Squad in action on and after 9/11/2001 and stepped froward to offer help. He initially though that gardening or mowing the lawn would be his contribution and was instead asked to learn EMS skills and ride the ambulance.  Dave accepted that challenge and became a certified EMT just a year later.  He can be found  frequently at the squad on weekdays, offering to help with non-emergency transportations and community events, as well as cover other shift openings in addition to his regular Thursday Day shift where he serves as the Crew Chief. Dave is picturted above (Center) with his Thursday AM crew. (L-R) Henrietta Mahon, Bridget Rath, Katrina Havourd, and Katherine Ganger.

In addition to EMT duties, Dave has served on the Board of Trustees, and several committees.  He has also chaired the Grants Committee since 2004, working tirelessly to win various grant awards to fund the equipment and training needed to keep the squad current with ever changing EMS standards.  Dave's efforts have helped the Squad raise just under $600,000 in grants. Dave also takes great interest and enthusiasm in our younger members teaching them not only EMS skills, but also challenging them to be better people, take on more responsibility and helping them become better leaders.

Squad Chief Kari Phair who nominated Dave for the award said, “Dave has become and continues to be an accomplished leader who graciously gives of himself to help others and be a vital part of our organization.  Summit EMS is privileged to have Dave as a member and so very proud to offer him as a nominee for the Overlook EMT Excellence Award.”

The all-volunteer First Aid Squad is always looking for new members to join its ranks. All needed training, uniforms and equipment is provided. For information, please call 908-277-9479, or Click HERE.
